Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) or spring catarrh is a chronic, recurrent, bilateral, at times asymmetrical, seasonally exacerbated external ocular inflammation affecting children and young adults. VKC usually begins before the age of 10 years.

Symptoms are usually worse for patients when the weather is warm and dry, whereas cooler weather with lower temperatures and rain tend to assuage symptoms. Signs in phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis include small yellow nodules that develop over the cornea, which ulcerate after a few days.

The most common symptoms are itching, photophobia, burning, and tearing. Children with VKC present with severe ocular symptoms, that is, severe eye itching and irritation, constant tearing, red eye, eye discharge, and photophobia. The clinical picture of VKC is characterized by ocular symptoms such as ocular pruritus, tearing, burning, foreign body sensation and photophobia [ 3 ]. The eyelid margins are not involved, in contrast to other types of allergic keratoconjunctivitis. Other typical signs of VKC include bulbar conjunctival hyperemia, a thick mucus discharge, and corneal involvement, including superficial punctate keratitis, epithelial erosions, shield ulcers, or plaques ( Figure 1 ). Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is severe, chronic allergic inflammation of the eye. It can result in small, round bumps known as giant papillae underneath the eyelid.
