We model the climatic mass balance of the ice cap for the period September 2000 to August 2009 on a daily basis. Fieldwork. [5] Between May and June 1995, an electromechanical drill ( Figure 1) was used to obtain an ice core from the top of Vestfonna Ice Cap in Nordaustlandet, Svalbard (79°58′N, 21°01′E, 600‐m a.s.l.). The drilling stopped at the 211‐m depth.

[1] The ice cap Vestfonna in the northern Svalbard archipelago is one of the largest ice bodies of the European Arctic (∼2400 km 2 ), but little is known about its mass balance.
Vestfonna Geophysical did not contribute to any primary research However, for the ice cap Vestfonna, in northeastern Svalbard, climatic mass balance modelling has suggested almost balanced conditions over a period of nine years (2000–2009). A slightly positive geodetic mass balance (1990–2005) has been reported from a comparison of laser altimetry to older DEMs. A spatial comparison of snow water equivalents above the previous end‐of‐summer surface serves for obtaining insights into the spatial distribution of snow accumulation across Vestfonna. Altitude was found to be the only significant spatial parameter for controlling snow accumulation across the ice cap. [1] The ice cap Vestfonna in the northern Svalbard archipelago is one of the largest ice bodies of the European Arctic (∼2400 km 2), but little is known about its mass balance. We model the climatic mass balance of the ice cap for the period September 2000 to August 2009 on a daily basis. Consequently, we argue that NO 3 − variation in the Vestfonna ice core was either affected by a change of weather conditions or by changes of NO x emissions from limited local regions in Eurasia.
